In The Hospital

Kim was induced on May 14, 2007, and went into full labor the next day. Evan was unable to be born naturally, so after two full hours of pushing (not including the 16 hours of contractions prior to that), Kim was wheeled into the operating room for an unplanned C-section. Evan's head was so wedged into the pelvic opening that the doctor had to struggle a bit to pry him free. Despite all of this, Evan was fine except for a large hematoma on the back of his head. Kim's recovery was unusually quick, as well.

• A nurse prepares Kim to be wheeled off into the operating room. Notice that Kim is smiling despite having just gone through two hours of pushing. Her epidural REALLY worked. She even laughed at the doctor's jokes during the surgery.

  
  
  

• I was actually able to be in the room during the surgery because of Kim's epidural. Surprisingly, I was even able to watch as the doctor made snipped, prodded, and pulled through Kim's insides trying to pry Evan free. I wish I had a photo of the instant Dr. Goldberg pulled Evan from the womb all gray and purple. He was hideous, but I was instantly smitten. This is the first photo I took in the OR after Evan was pulled free. He'd already turned pink by the time one of the doctors started cleaning him up and checking his vitals.

• A nurse holds Evan up for viewing after he was cleaned up, weighed, and diapered. Yes, he really was that ugly. Kim says but in the cute way, but no, he was just ugly.

  
  
  

• Kim spent nearly an hour in recovery, mostly in order to warm her back up after the surgery. That OR was cold, and Kim had internal organs exposed, greatly increasing the surface area she had to lose body heat through. This is her first chance to hold Evan. In the operating room they were only able to show her what he looked like before carting him off.
